Zika Virus Alert in Pune: Essential Precautions for Expecting Mothers

As of April 2025, Pune has experienced a significant number of Zika virus cases, with over 100 confirmed infections, including 45 pregnant women. While many of these women have delivered healthy babies, the potential risks associated with Zika virus during pregnancy necessitate continued vigilance.

Understanding Zika Virus and Its Risks During Pregnancy

Zika virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It can also spread via sexual contact and from mother to fetus during pregnancy. Infection during pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects, notably microcephaly, where a baby's head is smaller than expected, potentially resulting in developmental issues. Other complications may include vision and hearing problems, developmental delays, and in rare cases, miscarriage or stillbirth.

Current Situation in Pune

Between July and September 2024, Pune reported 100 Zika cases, with 43 involving pregnant women. Encouragingly, 10 of these women have delivered healthy babies, and ongoing monitoring of the remaining cases has shown no anomalies so far. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) continues to monitor these cases closely.

Recommended Precautions for Expecting Mothers

To minimize the risk of Zika virus infection:

  • Avoid Mosquito Bites: Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, IR3535, or picaridin. Wear long-sleeved clothing and stay in air-conditioned or well-screened areas. Use mosquito nets, especially during the day when Aedes mosquitoes are most active.

  • Eliminate Breeding Grounds: Regularly empty or cover containers that can hold standing water, such as buckets, flower pots, and birdbaths.

  • Practice Safe Sex: Use condoms or abstain from sexual activity during pregnancy, especially if your partner has traveled to or resides in a Zika-affected area.

  • Regular Medical Check-ups: Attend all prenatal appointments. If you experience symptoms like fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes, consult your healthcare provider promptly.

PMC's Initiatives

The PMC has intensified mosquito control measures, including fogging and fumigation in affected areas. They have also initiated testing for all pregnant women residing within five kilometers of Zika-affected zones. Expecting mothers are advised to undergo two ultrasound examinations during pregnancy to monitor fetal development.

Final Thoughts

While the current data is reassuring, it's crucial for expecting mothers in Pune to remain cautious. Adhering to preventive measures and staying informed can significantly reduce the risk of Zika virus infection. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.
